Groundwater Monitoring and Reporting

Burbank Landfill

Burbank, California
As part of an on-going detection monitoring and corrective action programs, the City of Burbank required assistance with modifications to the site waste discharge requirements (WDRs). EnviroSolve provided communications with the Regionsal Water Quality Control Board during the modifications. Draft WDRs were reviewed and comments were provided on behalf of the client. Overall program was reduced during this process by successfully negotiating a semi-annual monitoring schedule and decreased list of monitoring parameters. As a follow-up, EnviroSolve prepared a vadose-zone monitoring plan and statistical plan for the detection monitoring and corrective action programs. EnviroSolve began the routine groundwater monitoring program at the site in 2000. Monthly groundwater level measurements and quarterly groundwater sampling continued through the WDRs modification process. After the new WDRs were adopted, EnviroSolve was able to seamlessly implement the changes to the monitoring requirements.
Groundwater Investigation and Monitoring

Chiquita Canyon Landfill

Santa Clarita Valley, California
As part of the site Detection Monitoring Program, EnviroSolve completed installation of four deep groundwater monitoring wells and two boring, and abandoned four monitoring points on schedule allowing the facility modifications to begin. Monitoring wells were installed through the overlying alluvium into the Saugus and Pico formation bedrock using air-rotary drilling method. Recently, two additional groundwater monitoring wells were installed in an un-developed area of the site. Depths to groundwater were not known in this area and possible confining condition was suspected in the bedrock. Because of the unknowns, installation of these wells required flexibility and rapid decision making during field activities. Both of the wells were installed deeper than expected, with one well installed approximately 400 feet below ground surface. While performing the groundwater investigation tasks, EnviroSolve recognized opportunities to improve the site groundwater monitoring system. Recommendations were made to upgrade the existing dedicated pumping equipment and change the monitoring method to low-flow purge and sampling. This method provides for more reliable groundwater monitoring data at a lower overall sampling cost. Recommendations were accepted and EnviroSolve upgraded the site monitoring system. This included installing new pumps in existing and new wells, perfoming initial calibrations, and agency communications to change the sampling protocol. As a followup, EnviroSolve currently performs the on-going quarterly vadose-zone and groundwater monitoring at the site, including low-flow purge sampling at 15 monitoring wells.
