WM KETTLEMAN FACES NEW PROTEST
(December 11, 2009) WM’s Kettleman Hills facility in California faces new opposition as activists protest a California Department of Public Health (CDPH) decision allowing contaminated dirt from the Boeing-NASA Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) to be sent to the facility. In 1959 a partial nuclear reactor meltdown occurred at the SSFL site; however the WM Kettleman Hills facility is not licensed to accept radioactive waste. The Department of Toxic Substances Control will make a final decision, and has asked for further information from the CDPH regarding its decision to state that the contaminated dirt does not pose a public health threat and can be sent to the Kettleman Hills hazardous waste facility.
